I’ve been quiet about my work in progress that is no longer in progress. Resolution, Book 3 of my Captain Randall sapphic space adventure series, is done—cooked, forked, sliced and diced, and will ready for your hands and eyes any day now. Happy Pride!
I never set out to write a trilogy. I had no idea how to set one up. If I had, I might have done a few things differently. It’s interesting to write three books with the same characters, same universe, same general time period, same POV, etc. It’s constraining but also liberating.
Once the first book was done, it almost became nonfiction writing. Things happened and there was no changing them, even though they were fictional. They call it canon or a bible for a story. It’s not easy to maintain. When were these characters born, how do they age, what happened in their past that might have gotten a glancing mention in one book only to flesh out in another and need to conform? An interesting challenge. One I hope I met by pulling various threads together into one compelling, satisfying story.
So, what’s it about?
The exciting conclusion to the award-winning space adventures of Captain Lyn Randall sends Lyn on a joint expedition with Gaia to find their shared planet of origin. The politics of the two planets, classified secrets, uneasy alliances, not to mention Lyn’s marital troubles with her wife, Diana, add to the perilous nature of this adventure of a lifetime as they try to answer the question, once and for all, what does it mean to be human?
Resolution started, much like Tenacity did, with a hint in the previous book. Something has been discovered and begs for follow up. With Resolution, I knew going in I’d write it. All I needed was the entry. Tenacity was different. I thought Endurance was a standalone, but readers wanted more, and so did I. A passing reference to something of little importance to the plot became the entry point for Tenacity.
I love that kind of discovery. I may use that again. There’s a line in Resolution that has gotten me thinking. We’ll see.
For now, enjoy the entire series! I’ll post buy links and its page when I have them.
If you are at Readercon in July (Burlington, Mass.), I’ll be at the Broad Universe table in the dealers room, when not out and about.
